Jonathan Godbout on the start of his season: ‘To be able to make it to the Semifinals right now is unbelievable.’

What were you doing at age 16? It’s hard for us to think back that far, but we’re pretty sure it didn’t involve making an appearance as a force to be reckoned with on a national TV show.

But that’s what Jonathan Godbout is up to right now. On the premiere episode of American Ninja Warrior’s 13th season, Jonathan became one of only five Ninjas to complete the course.

“The thing I was feeling up on the start line was just pure excitement. I was so surprised by how I wasn’t at all nervous for this. I was just so ready and prepared for the moment. It was so much fun and it was so exciting,” Jonathan told us after his run.

One aspect that makes this even more impressive is the fact that Jonathan and his peers had no idea that this would be their year. Until season 13’s announcement, no one under the age of 19 had taken on the obstacles.

“The first thing that comes to mind is surprising,” he shared. “Two years ago I would never have thought that I would have this opportunity. To be able to make it to the Semifinals right now is unbelievable. It’s a surprise.”

But even with two years cut off his training time, Jonathan knew exactly how to prepare for what Ninja Warrior threw at him.

“In my training, I do a lot of explosive movements. A lot of power is what I focus on. That’s what I’m best at. I also work on balance a lot. That really helped, especially on Domino Effect where I felt really confident.”

Now, years before he thought he’d have the chance, Jonathan is through to the Semifinals of American Ninja Warrior!
